Forgetting about it the only way to heal Vipers’ wound
Don Bodger - Cowichan News Leader
October 14, 2009
Cowichan Valley Capitals’ coach Scott Robinson feels there’s only one way to deal with the 14-0 B.C. Hockey League loss to the Vernon Vipers Saturday that everyone wants to talk about.
“I can’t remember it anymore,’’ he said. “We encouraged our players to have a short memory on that one.’’
The players already felt beaten up enough about it and didn’t need any reminders to make the situation worse.
“I think we were a little awe-struck,’’ said Robinson. “We never snapped out of it. It was, as you can imagine, quite painful.’’
Goalie Laurent Brossoit gave up two goals in the first 10 minutes of his first start with the Caps. His replacement Alexandre Peck promptly got scored upon and Brossoit went back in for the rest of the game.
Robinson said Brossoit wanted to stay in after an eight-goal Vernon first period.
“That speaks volumes about the kid. He wanted to battle through.
“It was not a case of bad goaltending. I’m fairly confident Roberto Luongo would have let in at least 10.’’
The Caps are proceeding to alleviate their three-goaltender situation by moving Taylor Pears.
The Caps went into Kelowna Sunday against a tough Westside Warriors team and only trailed 2-1 midway through the game on a goal by affiliate player Josh Primeau of Delta. They eventually ran out of gas in a 6-1 defeat.
Including Wednesday’s 6-1 pounding against the Vees in Penticton, the Caps played three of the top five teams in Canada. They surrendered 26 goals while scoring just two.
The Caps salvaged one win from the trip by beating the Smoke Eaters 3-2 in Trail Friday.
A team in need of good news received it with the return of agitating forward Anthony Perdicaro from an ECHL tryout in Wheeling.
“We look forward to having him and his presence back,’’ said Robinson.
